Akui too much for Simeon to handle in 34-20 St. Rita win

CONGRATS, BOYS!!! WAY TO MAKE US PROUD!!! When ya turn 21 come on by and have a scotch on me!!

Friday's 76th Prep Bowl may have turned on a controversial fourth-quarter pass-interference call, but in the end it came down to one thing -- too much Jahwon Akui.

The St. Rita junior rushed for 148 yards -- including 98 in the second half -- and scored four touchdowns as St. Rita claimed the Catholic League's fourth consecutive Prep Bowl title with a 34-20 win over Simeon at Soldier Field.

"We figured we could dominate up front and our lineman did a great job," said Akui, the game's MVP. "There were lots of holes and lots of space to run. I just feel blessed."

With the score tied 20-20 early in the fourth quarter, Simeon appeared to have halted a St. Rita drive at the Wolverines' 28. But after an incomplete pass on fourth-and-17, Simeon was called for interference.

Someone on the Wolverines' sideline disagreed with the call, and Simeon was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct, putting St. Rita at the 11.

Two plays later, Akui bowled in from the 3 to give the Mustangs a 27-20 lead with 8 minutes, 3 seconds remaining. Akui added a 16-yard scoring run with 1:49 left.

Following the game, two Simeon coaches attempted to run after officials but were quickly restrained by Soldier Field security.

"I just saw two players go up for the ball and unfortunately they called it on us, but I didn't see any pass interference," Simeon defensive back Demarius Reed said. "The ref made the call."

Things couldn't have started worse for Simeon (10-4) as Akui took the opening kickoff 85 yards for a score. The Mustangs upped the lead minutes later when Travis Starks busted off right tackle for a 33-yard touchdown and a 14-0 lead.

Simeon sophomore quarterback Robert Gregory (12-for-26, 141 yards; 13 carries, 166 yards) sparked the Wolverines the rest of the half, rushing for 41 yards in a 15-play, 80-yard drive that was capped with his 1-yard plunge on fourth-and-goal to cut the lead to 14-6.

On Simeon's next drive, Gregory ran for 75 yards and a score, and Horatio Banks' two-point conversion knotted the score 14-14 with 10:47 left in the half.

Star of the game: Jahwon Akui, St. Rita, 29 carries, 148 yards, 2 TDs; 2 receptions, 24 yards, TD; 85-yard kickoff return for TD.

Key performers: St. Rita -- Robert Gallik, 10-for-14, 119 yards, TD. Simeon -- Robert Gregory, 13 carries, 161 yards, 2 TDs; 12-for-26, 141 yards; Demarius Reed, 6 receptions, 68 yards.

Adopt a Pet

If they would take Tommy off my hands Id gladly take all 900 of them!!! But they wont, so we need your help! If you know ANYONE looking for a great companion, please get in touch with these people.

The Dairyland Greyhound Racetrack in Kenosha, Wisconsin will be closing on 12/31/09.

900 Greyhounds need to be adopted or they will be euthanized, making this a great time to consider adopting a Greyhound.

They are laid back, great with kids, very loving dogs and they don’t need half the space people think they do. This would be a perfect addition to any family.

Only 5 weeks left to get this task done. Joanne Kehoe @ 312-559-0887 or Dairyland Race Track Adoption Center @ 262-612-8256.

Think Global Shop Local!!!

If they would only add a humidor and a scotch tasting room we would be all set! But in the mean time, we will be stopping by and looking for holiday purchases... we suggest you do the same! Thanks for the info, Jim!

There is a new gift shop that opened up at 3524 W. 111th Street (111th & Drake). It’s a nice little store with a neighborhood look, feel and ties. The owners have a few unique ideas for this holiday season that you may be interested in hearing about.

Mount Greenwood Gifts presents "Kidshop" Give your child the opportunity to learn the joy of picking out, paying for, wrapping and giving Mom, Grandma or Aunt the gift that they have chosen for them with their own little hands. Here’s how it works:

Ø Call MGG at (773) 233-4902 to make an appointment for your child or grandchild to shop. The appointment should only take about 15 to 20 minutes.
Ø Decide how much your child will be spending.
Ø Bring your child for their shopping trip.
Ø Your child will be asked to write down the answers to 5 questions they will be asked about the person they are buying for. You will get to keep this answer sheet…..it’s ALWAYS hilarious! (My husband was 8’-10” when our son was in kindergarten!)
Ø After your child has finished choosing a gift, they’ll pay for it, get their receipt and change, and then assist in boxing and wrapping it. Then they’ll do the finishing touches with bows and a personalized tag that they will sign.

Unless your child prefers to have someone familiar at arms reach, you will be asked to wait outside the store while your child shops. Some children like the independence of shopping by themselves, while others prefer a familiar face around. If your child would rather have you wait outside because he/she is a BIG boy or girl, you will be notified the moment they have completed their shopping and are ready to go!

All that’s left to do after this is stop somewhere else or a nice cup of hot chocolate!!!

**********We’d be happy to take pictures or video if you provide the camera**********

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!!

Rugai has some explaining to do

Now I know this is not 60655, but since it is Rugai, and Im sure there are more than a few streets around these parts that look closer to the left than right, I feel this pertains to us as well!

Residents Want Same Street Fix Their Alderman Got
Neighbors Want Their Street Resurfaced, Just Like Rugai's Block Was Last Year

The 8800 block of South Leavitt in Chicago's 19th Ward is full of potholes and cracks and has no curbs. One block away, the 8900 block of South Bell -- where the local alderman, Virginia Rugai, lives -- was resurfaced in 2008 and still looks brand new.

You could call it a tale of two streets. One of them is perfect; freshly resurfaced with nice sidewalks and curbs. The other is a mess.

They're just a block apart in the same ward in the Beverly neighborhood. As 2 Investigator Pam Zekman reports, residents in the 19th Ward were pretty angry over how their alderman has been spending a special fund intended for ward improvements.

They wanted to know why does one street get help and not the other?

"This road is just horrible", said resident Angelo Parente.

"The whole street has never been fixed", added Reginald Heath.

"It's awful and it's been this way for the past 15-years," said Matthew White.

The three men are neighbors and they said they are fed up with the state of their street.

The 8800 block of South Leavitt Avenue is uneven, it's badly cracked and it's filled with potholes. Just a block away, the 8900 block of South Bell Avenue has been resurfaced and is almost as smooth as glass.

So what's the difference between Bell Avenue and Leavitt Avenue? The local alderman, Virginia Rugai, lives on Bell.

CBS 2 reviewed the Aldermanic Menu Fund and found that Rugai spent $63,688 to resurface her block in 2008. And she spent another $16,185 to build a traffic circle at the end of her block in 2007.

"I think she's just taking care of herself and her neighbors," White said.

But Rugai said that's not the case.

"I make sure that others are served before I am," Rugai said.

She said she's aware of the bad street just one block from her house and she said "to really do it properly, you have to dig up that whole street and go down vary far, not just paving of the asphalt."

Rugai said the job would cost $600,000 to add the needed sewer lines and curbs.

But on Leavitt, residents wanted what Rugai got on her street: some simple resurfacing.

"It really makes us angry," White said. "We've been calling up there to her office and nothing has happened and this has been for the last five years."

Rugai absolutely denied that she selected Bell for resurfacing to benefit herself.

"Absolutely no! Absolutely not. It was for my neighbors. I was doing fine driving on the previous street," Rugai said.

Some aldermen said they think the process needs reform, including Ald. Joe Moore (49th).

Moore said that in 2010, he will let his constituents vote on how to spend his aldermanic menu money.

"It removes any taint that an alderman is making decisions to benefit a particular voting block or to benefit a contributor", said Moore.

Rugai said she has put Leavitt on the list for resurfacing next year. Neighbors said they will believe it when they see it.

The official stance on this blog is BEARS SUCK!!! Hey, Life, HOW DAMN LONG TIL OPENING DAY??!!??!! Now cue up Waylon!!! And I dont give a damn what you all say!!!

Come Join us at Daley Plaza - Saturday, Nov. 28th at 9:00 AM

Dear Friends of the Holy Family:

Given intense media publicity, you may be aware the City of Chicago, because of falling tax revenue this year, discontinued their longtime practice of building an enormous “Holiday Tree” in Daley Plaza composed of dozens of smaller trees. Reports indicate the annual cost, including labor, to have been about $300,000. Instead, the city has erected a tree donated by a suburban family which is much smaller. Public reaction has been dismal. Police have already dubbed it “The Charlie Brown Tree.”

We are pleased to announce we are not reducing our commitment to honor the Christ Child. Please join us Saturday, November 28th, in Chicago’s Daley Center Plaza at Dearborn and Washington Streets, when we will again erect our life-size Nativity Scene. Construction will begin at 9 a.m. and the “God Squad” in action is a sight to behold.

There will be a brief rededication ceremony at 10:30 a.m. Among the participants will be a bell choir from Santa Maria del Popolo Parish, Mundelein, IL. If you are unable to come down at that time, please try to visit our nativity scene before December 26th, when we must take it down. If possible, please take your children or grandchildren to visit this magnificent display.

As always, there are considerable yearly expenses involved in erecting and maintaining our Nativity Scene. Any donation you would care to make to help offset these expenses would be deeply appreciated. They may be sent to the Nativity Scene Committee at the address below. Your past generosity has been of great help and most heartening. Your support of this display will help remind our fellow citizens that it is Christmas, not just the “holidays.”

May the Christ Child bless you and your loved ones this Christmas and always.

HELP KEEP CHRISTMAS ALIVE IN CHICAGO!!

HISTORY OF NATIVITY SCENE AT CHICAGO’S DALEY PLAZA

In 1985, for as long as anyone could remember, the City of Chicago had always erected a nativity scene in the lobby of City Hall each year during the Christmas season. The display was there every year in times of war and peace, through good times and bad. It was a warm and welcome sign to anyone entering City Hall from the cold of Chicago's Decembers that the Christmas season had arrived and was duly recognized out of respect for the Christian heritage of the United States of America and the people of Chicago.

However, by 1985, a sea change had occurred in Chicago politics and the moral climate as well. After the death in 1976 of long time mayor Richard J. Daley, a devout Roman Catholic, the office of mayor was held in succession by two of his protégés, Michael Bilandic and Jayne Byrne. In 1983, Harold Washington, became Chicago's first black mayor. Mayor Washington kept his campaign pledge to make significant changes in city government, including the selection of a new cabinet. One of his appointments was a rather arrogant attorney named Judson Miner to the position of Corporation Counsel, the head of the city's legal department.

In a letter dated October 22, 1985, Sylvia Neil, Midwest Legal Director for the American Jewish Congress requested the City of Chicago not allow the erection of the nativity scene in the lobby of City Hall. The American Jewish Congress eventually sued the City over the issue and lost. However, upon appeal, the 7th Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals overturned the lower court's decision in a 2-1 opinion written by Judge Flaum on August 18, 1987. Judson Miner said the City of Chicago would not appeal.

When news broke that City Hall was ending the time-honored tradition of a having a nativity scene in the lobby at Christmas, a group of Chicagoans headed by William Grutzmacher and a black minister, the late Rev. Hiram C. Crawford, went to the office of Judson Miner requesting an explanation of his position in support of the order to remove the nativity scene. Miner refused to meet with the group until Mr. Grutzmacher informed a secretary that if Miner did not allow them into his office and meet with his group, they had better call the police because they would refuse to leave City Hall until Miner spoke with them. Finally, Miner admitted them to his office and told them besides violating the principle of separation of church and state, it was "time to get rid of that thing."

Mr. Grutzmacher's group decided if the City of Chicago government was going to evict the Christian holiday display from City Hall, they would erect their own across the street in the Daley Center Plaza, public property long used as a venue for expression of free speech, including political demonstrations. He applied for and received a permit from the Public Building Commission to place a nativity scene in Daley Plaza. Grutzmacher purchased a relatively small nativity scene set and a group of volunteers erected it in Daley Plaza and took turns standing guard. In a move that shocked the world, the Public Building Commission yielding to pressure from the American Jewish Congress, reversed itself, and ordered county employees to demolish the nativity scene late one afternoon--just in time for TV news crews to film the entire episode. Pictures of government employees demolishing the set and struggling with Grutzmacher and his volunteers over the little statues made prime time news around the world. Angry calls of protest came from as far away as Germany by people who could not believe this could happen in America.

In case number 87 C 10746, Grutzmacher vs. Public Building Commission, in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, Eastern Division, Senior Federal District Judge James B. Parsons ruled on Dec. 4, 1989 that the Public Building Commission was enjoined from discriminating against all forms of religious expression and ordered the Public Building Commission to permit Grutzmacher to erect a nativity scene display during the Christmas season. This expensive lawsuit was won against opposition from the American Jewish Congress, ACLU, American Atheists, and the circulators of a petition opposing the nativity scene signed by the late Joseph Cardinal Bernardin, Catholic Archbishop of Chicago.

In 1996, William Grutzmacher retired and moved from the Chicago area. Before leaving, he contacted two friends, Jim Finnegan and Terry Hodges, about continuation of what had become a Christmas tradition every year in Daley Plaza: display of one of the largest nativity scene sets in the world. They agreed this wonderful tradition of keeping Christ in Christmas should continue and made the moral and financial commitment it would.

The Nativity Scene Committee is pledged to continue to erect this display in Chicago's Daley Plaza every Christmas with the help of a group of volunteer tradesmen that has become known as the "God Squad." The Nativity Scene Committee depends upon the grace of God and the generosity of those who wish to keep Christ in Christmas for continued success. Donations are most welcome and may be sent to the Nativity Scene Committee, at 11811 Will-Cook Road, Palos Park, IL 60464.

Show some MTG support!

From our good friend Jim McMahon... You have all been so supportive of this blog, now time to be supportive of a real cause! Please read this tear jerking letter and give as much support as you can! Thank you all in advance! Boss

Dear Friends & Neighbors,

I am writing this to request your support in helping out a family in our neighborhood, the McGoverns. Many of you are familiar with this story, but for those that are not, here’s how one family’s life changed in an instant, on a warm summer day last July 28th.
Every parents worst nightmare became a reality for Jim and Jackie McGovern when their two and a half year old daughter Lauren, managed to climb the ladder on the family’s backyard swimming pool at 106th & Millard, and fell in. She was found in the water unresponsive shortly after this, and after calling 9-1-1, one of the neighbors immediately went to work trying to resuscitate her, while the Fire Department ambulance was responding. She was rushed to Christ Hospital, where she spent the next several months clinging to life. She was later transferred to, and is currently in the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC), and with the help of God, will be coming back home to her family during the first week of December.

Her Aunt Christine, would like to thank our neighbors for the huge outpouring of past support from the community, and is asking for our future support by taking a few moments out of our busy schedules a couple times a week, to send an uplifting note to the McGovern family on Lauren's “carepages.” She realizes that life continues for everyone and we’ve all got families of our own, but there has been a considerable decrease in messages and this little girl and her family still need our support. Even if you don't know the McGovern family personally, it would mean a lot to them if you could please send them some words of encouragement.

Please register at https://www.carepages.com/carepages/laurenmariemcgovern/messages,
go through the pictures of Lauren and take note of her great progress. This beautiful little lady is a real fighter and she is working so very hard. Let’s all take a few minutes a week and show the McGovern family that we care. Hopefully, these messages make Jackie and Jimmy realize that they are not alone in this battle, and will help their family get through the tough days that still lie ahead.

I’m asking everyone to make this a community effort and have faith that God is listening to everyone’s prayers. Please continue to pray for God’s mercy, and that His healing hands will grace Lauren with a quick and complete recovery.

I would like to thank everyone for their future prayers and support for the McGoverns, and for taking the time to send a kind word with best wishes to Lauren.

Jim McMahon

Coming Soon to Mt. Greenwood... Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Parlor

Hello my good citizens of Mt.Greenwood, Boss here. My good friend who is a retired Polce Officer informed me about our soon to come Ben & Jerry's off 111th street.

In 1981 a man named Wesley Clark shot and killed Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner in the back, then several times in the face. He did this in front of several witnesses, including his own brother. He was arrested while still holding the murder weapon in his hand and taken to the hospital to have a bullet, fired from Officer Faulkner's weapon, removed from his body. Despite 20 years of appeals, Wesley Clark (a.k.a. Mumia Abu Jamal) still sits on death row in Pennsylvania because 16 different judges have come to the shocking conclusion that he was indeed guilty and received a fair trial.

Ben Cohen, the "Ben" of "Ben and Jerry's", thinks otherwise. He not only signed his name to a petition calling for the release of "Mumia", but he made sure the words, "Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream" were right next to his name. Hey, it's a free country, you can support cop killers if you want, but the rest of us are free to refuse to purchase products from someone who not only supports a convicted cop killer, but made sure his company was noted as supporting a convicted cop killer.

You may ask, will I, the Boss ever buy ice cream from there??? Only if they make a Johnny Walker & Cohiba cigar flavored ice cream!! Now, GET TO BLOGGIN!!!

Another Idiot Banned

Dear "concerned MTG mom": Your comments were reviewed for accuracy and it turns out you are a liar. Seems you may be one of the idiots responsible for taking out the other blog. Too bad we are a bit more saavy than a complete moron who has nothing better to do than sit around his mom's basement and attempt to sabotage an otherwise productive blog. Sorry the tough kids beat you up every day and you find solace in trying to destroy what is productive. We are sure we will read about you some day donning your best trench coat, arming yourself to the T and full of Columbine like intentions, but will be stopped short when you get a wedgey and a swirley from the class bully! YOU ARE NOW BANNED! FOR GOOD! Oh, and if you dont like the music, feel free to click on that little X on the upper right hand corner of the screen... Now, GET TO DOING WHATEVER IT IS A WASTE OF SPACE SHIT STAIN DOES! You will notice as many of your comments that we can trace to your IP have been deleted; that is unless they have been forwarded on to the D unit along with your threat. Apologies to our followers, and rest assured there were no African American males in the park talking about "getting back at whitey" or "raping a white girl"... We sincerely apologize for allowing that crap to get through.

Michael Scott Suicide?

Ok so not this Michael Scott... Isnt this the same Michael Scott that was appointed to the head of CPS by King Richard of Bridgeport himself? And the same who was being investigated by the feds for suspect land deals near potential olympic sites? Hmmm... maybe the Feds were getting a little too close for comfort. While we mourn for his family (well, not really because I cant imagine the Scott family being too busted up over our loss!), we can only hope he left behind a very detailed note on the steps of the SunTimes (near where his body was found) that will be admitted as exhibit A in the corruption trial of one Chicago Monarch! Unbelieveable!

My cop friend emailed me this story from the cop blog... keep reading if you want to be infuriated!

A BIG Part of the Problem
But the City Council just can't help themselves:

After an emotional appeal from a straight-A student facing deportation in 33 days, a City Council committee agreed Friday to champion the cause of Rigo Padilla and others caught in the switches while awaiting immigration reform.

On Jan. 18, Padilla was driving home from watching a football playoff game on TV after having a few beers with friends when he was arrested. He was charged with driving under the influence after being accused of rolling through a stop sign.

There was a designated driver that night, but Padilla said he had dropped the friend off before getting behind the wheel for the eight-block drive to his own home.

So again, how are this illegal alien's bad choices worthy of even a second of the City Council's time? Isn't the City almost bankrupt? Isn't the mayor laying off workers left and right? Isn't industry fleeing the City and conventioneers abandoning Chicago at record levels? Hasn't Chicago's unemployment rate topped 12 or 13%? Yet our City Council is going to "champion" this cause? And (wonder of wonders), this illegal wants to become a lawyer?

Here we go again... Our thought on the matter is really, who gives a s*%t? But just in case of a miracle, and we have to claim that we "never gave up and always believed" we will pretend to care. Smart money is on the Samurai opening up a can on the Bears... our prediction is Bears 4 Niners 86!

Community Alert

Police have issued a community alert about three men who attempted to abduct a 14-year-old boy Friday in Mount Greenwood.
The attempted kidnapping occurred about 3:15 p.m. in the 10700 block of South Hamlin Avenue when three men in a dark brown minivan drove alongside the boy and parked their car, according to the alert from Calumet Area detectives.
A passenger got out of the car and ordered the boy into the minivan, but the boy ran home, and the would-be kidnappers drove away.
All three suspects were 17 to 19 years old, according to the alert. The passenger who approached the boy was wearing a blue baseball cap and dark brown sweatshirt with white lettering.

Volunteers Needed

Courtesy of our friend Jim McMahon... Thanks Jim

The "Patriot Guard" is looking for volunteers tomorrow to ride their motorcycles as an escort in the funeral procession for this soldier from Queen of Martyrs Church at 103rd & Drake, to Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. If you can make it, get to the church by 10:30 because the mass starts at 10:00 AM.

It would be even better if you can go from Blake Lamb at 103rd, just east of Cicero at 9:00 AM to escort him to the church too, but you'll have to spend an hour waiting for the mass to end. Anything you can do would be appreciated.

PLEASE PASS THIS ON TO ANYONE YOU KNOW THAT RIDES A MOTORCYCLE TO HELP HONOR THIS YOUNG MAN.

CPD pension news

I know there alot of CPD in 60655 so I thought you might like this... I know just how important a pension is. Here is a youtube link to a Fox news piece and a copy of an email Trustee Shields sent out. From what my guy on the department tells me, this Shields guy is really shaking things up over at the pension board...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNo0L6TK2eA

Last week, a Detective on the Police Department brought to my attention that Mike Masters was participating in our Policemen's Annuity and Benefit Fund of Chicago. As an appointed member of the exempt ranks, Masters has a salary of $155,000+. I then decided to investigate further with other exempt member. Weis, Brust, Daly and Klimas were all former FBI agents appointed to exempt ranks. They too are participating.

This is not simply a matter of sworn vs non-sworn members of the exempt rank. The fact that these member never participated to our fund prior to their exempt appointment eliminates them.

Here is the law: The Illinois Pension Code that governs our fund includes persons of exempt rank in our fund only if they meet the following criteria under Sec 5-109.

"Policeman" : (b) An employee as defined in sub-paragraph (a) immediately above who is serving in the regularly constituted police department of a city in a rank or position which is exempt from civil service and who, immediately prior to the time he began such service, was a participant in the Policemen's Annuity and Benefit Fund Act

The five exempt members have a salary ranging from $140,000 to $310,000. This is a lot of money to expose our pension fund to the risk of these members obtaining a pension. If these members were to be participants in our fund for 3 Years, they can take advantage of our loopholes in the pension code. If they get another "safety or investigative" job after the 3 years on our department, in either the County, the State, the City, the Federal Government, or become a police Chief outside of the city, they can continue to participate in our fund.

Here is the law: Sec 5-414 Credit For Service

Any participant in this fund (other than a member of the fire department of the city) who has rendered service as a member of the police department of the city for a period of 3 years or more is entitled to credit for the various purposes of this article for service rendered prior to becoming a member or subsequent thereto for the following periods:

(c) While performing safety or investigative work for the county in which such city is principally located or for the State of Illinois or for the federal government, on leave of absence from the department of police, or while performing investigative work for the department as a civilian employee of the department.
(d) While on leave of absence from the police department of the city and serving as the chief of police of a police department outside the city.

Not only does our Board need to remove them from this fund, we also need to explore how it is that these members were invited in to our fund in the first place. Who let them in? As we all take a closer look at this pension system, we realize that it is far too often that the chosen ones benefit from this fund, not the hard working men and women of this department. It takes a village to raise a child. In our case, it takes an entire police department to police our pension fund.

And we attend every CAPS meeting so feel free to air your grievances here and I will certainly bring a laundry list to air at the meetings! Im retired so I have the time! As for the format here, this is what we were thinking... We would have an array of topics (i.e., public safety, local business, local events, politicians, MTG chance encounters etc etc and any additional that are suggested by our readers)that would be new for each month... under each topic would be open forum. At the end of each month, they would be archived (so you could go back and view/cut and paste/revisit a topic) and similar posts would start fresh for each month. As topics gained popularity and/or fell out of favor with readership, the topics would change, with a few being staples. Will get started on this and look forward to the challenge of being a good neighbor! Stay safe out there, MTG! Thanks for your patience, we will be up and running on all cylinders shortly...NOW GET GET TO BLOGGIN!
