Time To Rise Up!!!

Keller in dark blue, national average in light blue, rest of shitty, I mean City magnet schools in gray...

now read this...

So we have a school that actually works, and Da Mayor and all his henchmen are hatching up a plan to move it away from here. My guess is that our beloved Keller school is destined for a place with a little more diversity. A place where literally millions upon millions of dollars have been sent and the problem still is not corrected. A place where "schools" have been renamed "career academy" and discredited in an attempt to make CPS look more successful than it really is. A place where de-enrollment is a standard practice on the first day so Da Mayor can boast a "95% first day attendance" for the purpose of state funding (anyone else find it odd that CPS had traditionally less than 60% first day attendance, and then miraculously it went to the high 90s???). A place where students get PAID for good grades because the idea of pride, college, a career, advancement, retirement, and a long fruitful life just arent enough motivation! A place that begs the question, maybe it's the indian, and not the arrow!

Seems like Rugai is flip flopping on this, and refuses to answer up to what is becoming more and more imminent...That Keller School is going to be shut down and relocated. I guess we are essentially being punished for being successful and there is nothing anyone can say or do without the fear of being labeled a racist! I can tell you this...Daley, Duncan, Rugai WHOEVER can put all the schools, all the resources, all the teachers in certain areas of this city and guess what? THE STUDENTS WILL CONTINUE TO KILL EACH OTHER! I for one do not mind my taxes being raised to improve the schools like Keller. But when Huberman and Da Mayor raise my taxes to the tune of over $30 million to identify and intervene with the "most at risk students in our city" yet want to close down schools like Keller well that makes me just besides myself! That is what the police are for!

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH PEOPLE! It is time to get off our asses and say NO!!! Call Rugai, call Da Mayor, call Huberman, call your friends, neighbors, fellow parents and say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!! Just because our students actually succeed and find other hobbies than killing each other does not mean they are second class to ANYONE in this city! Imagine the uproar IF there were a successful school in Englewood, or Garfield Park, or Austin and they wanted to close the doors and move it here! Imagine if they had successful students and the city was going to make them travel into dangerous communities to attend their school! (look no farther than the Fenger fiasco...and those were gang banger kids that couldnt get into the Carver military school in their neighborhood!) The fake reverends would be all over the place! Well, people, it is time for us to step up! It is time for us to flood the alderman's office, the school boards office, the Mayors office everyone with phone calls DEMANDING our Keller school be let alone! Instead of looking to shut us down, maybe the powers should use us as an example!!! Now, GET TO DOIN WHATEVER WE NEED TO DO TO SAVE KELLER!!!

  1. You're as wrong can be, my friend.

A majority of the students at Keller hail from Beverly, not Mount Greenwood. Meanwhile, Mount Greenwood School is getting overcrowded.

Do you think if this school was in Beverly, or West Beverly, the people in those areas would be saying the same as they are now? When Lenart Gifted School was moved from Durkin Park (Scottsdale) to 81st and Lasalle the people at Keller all laughed. Many of the white people pulled their kids and sent them to Keller.

The fact of the matter is Ginger caved into the Beverly people....again.

You state in your bio you are born, raised and planted in Mount Greenwood. Well then, QUIT FALLING FOR THE SAME OLE B.S. THE 19th WARD HAS SLUNG THIS WAY FOR YEARS!!!

You seem like a nice guy, but please wake up! The people of Mount Greenwood get the short end of the stick all the time. With guys like you caving in it will always be that way. Let the Mount Greenwood kids get a break.

  2. By the way, there is a difference between gifted and magnet schools.

Students have to test in to gain admittance to Keller or Lenart. They are the only gifted schools on the South Side. There are two other gifted schools on the North Side. Magnet schools are not for higher students on the scale.

  3. You must first relize that Keller is a Gifted School. IT IS NOT A NEIGHBORHOOD SCHOOL. To be accepeted at Keller you must score over 90% on the Iowa exams and then take a test to see if you qualify. Keller serves the entire city.

The talk of closing (moving) Keller is to relieve overcrowding from Mount Greenwood, which is a NEGHBORHOOD SCHOOL.

  4. You have GOT to be kidding me!?!? Someone please verify this with Rugai et al! Closing down Keller? Boss is 100% right on...other communities would not stand for this, neither should we!!!

  5. A gifted program can be held at any location. A neighborhood school cannot. Mount Greenwood kids get screwed again so Ginger can take care of Beverly.

  6. then don't depend on these demoRATS to do anything for you...vote them out and let the new elected officials take care of our own!!!

  8. There are 13 Regional Gifted Centers in Chicago.
5 in the Far North Region, 4 in the North,Central, and West regions, 3 in the South Region, and 1 in the Far South Region--Keller. Keller is the K-8 Harvard of the CPS, it is an asset that certainly adds value to the neighborhood. Any child from the area can test to gain admission to Keller for the 1st grade and over 60% of its students come from the 19th ward.

The REAL problem here is the overcrowding at Mt. Greenwood School, and this must be addressed. The parents in this community pay way too much in taxes to have to beg CPS to address this issue. While we are stuck with 80 and 60 year old buildings, the CPS is building new schools throughout the city, partially on OUR tax dollars, Roseland, Little Village, Ashburn, Gage Park to name a few. Its time for the CPS to build a new school in the neighborhood that ALL of our kids can go to. CPS has been getting off cheap in Mt Greenwood for decades due to the disproportunate number of children that have always attended Catholic grade and high schools. With the economy in the s*****r, neighbors have been forced to take the kids out of St. Christina, Queen of Martyrs, and St. Catherines and drive Mt Greenwood School attendance to an all time high, an increase of 185 students in the past two years alone. Well, I got news for you, the economy ain't getting better anytime soon, and the attendance at Mt. Greenwood School will most likely continue to grow. CPS's proposal to ship the number 2 school in the state out of our area, as a bandaid (the capacity of Keller is 235) for the overcrowding of Mt. Greenwood School, is not an acceptable solution.

CPS-- do the right thing, spend the money, OUR money and build here. As far as I can tell it has already been bought and paid for.

  9. Hey does anyone check on their teenagers anymore? Was walking my dog around 11 on Sat night down 103 and Central Park, 1.2-2 dozen kids all with multiple beer bottles in hand running up and down a driveway and in and out of the house, quite a few were obviously quite intoxicated. How are these kids getting home? Are they getting in your car and driving? Are you picking them up? Do you not smell that they reek of ETOH? Are they walking while intoxicated? Do you not notice them stumbling in the door? How about the party throwers parents, they don't see a few extra cases of beer bottles in the trash? Smell all of the alcohol in the house? Hear from neighbors? People, times are different. You can lose everything!! Pay attention to your teens, where they are, what they are doing, who they are with! I would be surprised if no neighbors called the police on this very loud, very intoxicated bash.

  10. ARE YOU KIDDING....My wife & I have this discussion every week about how on the weekends (and when their off from school for whatever reason)that the dozen or more of them walk the neighborhood destroying property, causing mischief, etc.(probably city worker/copper-firemens kids)-We have come to the conclusion when they hit a certain age in this area(13-up), the parents forget about them ,focus on their little rug rats, and talk about having a few more...As far as we see it ,the same women around here are ALWAYS popping out babies(so they don't have to work)and hubby is out making the money to keep them home to raise them til their deviate stage.Just look around the railroad tracks and parks...you're sure to find your kid if he's not at home!!!!

  16. Could the individual who posted the statement,"probably city worker/copper-firemens kids" in regards to kids causing mischief, please explain his reasoning and/or how he/she came to that conclusion?

  17. I didn't post that City worker/copper-firemans kid, but having grown up around here the cops kids were always the worst behaved.

  18. I too grew up around here and now own a home. I don't think it's fair or accurate to say that a certain occupation has irresponsible children or are parents that tolerate this type of behavior. I can point out just as many kids who's parents are employed in the private sector, that aren't the little darlings some think they are.

  20. I know who's house was hosting the underage drinking bash. Parents are not CPD nor CFD, however I can lay odds they were at St. Rita that night for a fund raiser and left their little partier at home. As I was walking by I saw the boy of the house running around with his guests, everyone with beers in hand.

  22. I am a cops kid, now grown and a fireman. The kids I hung out with up until high school got in lots of trouble. None of them were children of cpd or cfd. In high school, the friends I spent most of my time with, were children of cpd primarily, and there was far less trouble. Just my .02

  23. The CPS needs to build a state of the art school for Mt. Greenwood like they have done in the shit neighborhoods. Our tax money have been building schools everywhere except in our own neighborhood. Taking over Keller is not the answer.
