Fuck It!

Well no one here can say we didnt try! Nearly 4,000 views, yet barely 5 posts a day! We have asked for commentary, new ideas, reached out to locals and even wrote a few news papers for some material. I am sick and tired of writing up posts to see no additions, no original thoughts or ideas to add to the blog. We weeded out those who destroyed the other blog only to find out that perhaps they are the ones who keep a blog afloat in the first place! So we will have one more open post... Anyone who gives a shit and wants to save the 60655 blog speak now. I would love nothing more than to see this thing continue on. But without any interest we are not going to spin our wheels. So unload people, ALL POSTS GET POSTED (except the obvious obscene language, proper names, etc etc) If anyone else has an interest in taking this blog over in case of a minimal turnout on this our possible last posting, please email me at aroundandin60655@gmail.com all thoughts welcome!

  1. I know exactly how you're feeling regarding the lack of interest and/or posts. I too started a local blog sometime ago, telling neighbors etc. When I told people of my blog, they loved the idea and maybe visited once or twice, but then that was it. I found it to be fun but a lot of work. My line of thinking was in this time of cyber news and communication, it would be an easy way to stay in touch, discussing the issues of the day in a civilized manner etc. Since so many in our community are computer savy, I thought people would welcome a venue to share info. What I found is that people are just to busy and/or apathetic to bother to add a comment, unless that is they have a need to use their annonymity to attack someone, which I didn't allow. I think most use the computer to shop or read a quick email and that's it. Really sad in a way because those of us who do try, see what a valuable instrument in communication the computer can be.

Getting off topic a little here, but in my opinion, this is one reason and/or example of why our country is in the sad state of affairs it is,"Apathy". Politicians know that people may get enraged at the time the news of new taxes or corruption, but their memories fade quickly or apathy takes over. People have to take the kids to school,go shopping etc. and they're thinking is,"let the other guy do something about it".

Knowing how much time goes into keeping a blog going, I thank you..at least you tried.

    Take care

  2. Anyone have any idea what the long term effects of St Xavier's expansions over the years are going to have on our community? I won't lie, I don't want a "diverse" neighborhood. I haven't seen too many of them work in our city. I don't like the university buying up houses and putting students in there. Thats not even a diversity issue though. Who wants a house full of college students next door?
Further, what long-term effects will this have on our property values?
Finally, I had heard that the university wanted their Police Dept to patrol our neighborhood and that Ginger turned them down. I would personally welcome the help.

  3. Don't give up. I check your blog everyday. It has a lot of potential. It will take time to catch on. One criticism though -- The format is dull. It looks too plain. Blogs like Shaved are more colorful.

Finally, with the elections growing closer, it will get more postings and more readers.

There's a posting above about St. Xavier. How about comments on SXU's programs, tuition, placement rate, etc. Maybe you could invite them to post/comment.

    Keep up the good work!

  4. Please keep up the good work. I am one of those who visit daily (sometimes more than once), but do not post. I will try to do better.

  6. O.K.- Let's get a debate going. How does everyone feel about President Obama's first year in office? (I know, 11 months)

  7. I enjoy your blog, I like the content about what is going on in the neighborhood not only in 60655 but also 60643. You do a great job and have interesting topics. I found your blog via Second City Copper so I hope people visiting your blog contribute more. Well thanks for listening.

  8. I think on the last blog the weekly "open posts" is where all the action was. Maybe try that for a week and see what happens, remeber there'd be like 60 comments sometimes....

  9. i observed Jimmy Carroll in rainbow cone ice cream parlor with a little red hair guy on his shoulders. what was strange was that they were sharing a milkshake with two straws.

  10. Didn't you just post that you KNOW who your posters are? You went on and on about how you even know what type of computer they use. Might scare people away.
Oh, try more "OPEN" posts like the old 60655 blog.

  11. There's a Congressional election coming up.

Most of us in 60655 are represented by Dan Lipinski, altho I think some to the east are represented by Bobby Rush.

Why not invite each one to submit a post to the blog: Where do they stand on the issues: Obama Healthcare, the economy, the wars, etc? Where do they get their largest political contributions?

Do they have any Primary opposition? Who are the Primary opponents? Who are the Republican candidates?

What about our Illinois senators and representatives? Many of us are city, county, and state workers. Some politicians want to take away our current pension plans. Where do our current representatives stand on this issue?

How about an open post on the 19th Ward alderman! Compliments and criticisms.

Remind each one of these politicians that there are a lot of votes in 60655.

  14. Don't sweat it this is a labor of love. You will learn how to create and put up pictures and video. It is a slow process by you will gain readers and have fun too.

  15. Just read that the Senate passed the 1000 page 1.1 TRILLION spending bill. In case you have a hard time fathoming that amount of money, just remember that the .1 equals 100 BILLION. I hope the working class people realize that there is not enough wealthy people in this country to tax for the amount they are spending. I wonder who will make up the difference.........ANY THOUGHTS!

  16. Totally creeped out by WE KNOW WHO YOU ARE!!!!!!Read just about every day, but here in Mayberry, dont need anything coming back to bite me in the ass!!!!!!

  17. Hey Boss,

WTF are you bitchin about? Don’t worry about the comments. Focus on the 3,800 hits instead, that’s pretty impressive for a new blog and those numbers will only grow with time……that’s all that matters.

Most people read blogs religiously and NEVER post a comment. I read dozens of them every day and only post on a few when I feel I can contribute something to the subject. So a low number of comments is a piss poor indicator that you’re not running an effective blog and getting a lot of valuable information out there. Don’t forget that the lions share of your readers are primarily from this neighborhood too, not from all over the place.

    Here’s the math on my blog;
    12/05/09 thru 12/11/09 ~ 7 days = 928 views and 28 comments.
    That’s only about a 3% comment rate.

You’re averaging about 85 hits per day, so if you’re getting 5 comments per day, that’s about a 6% comment rate. What’s wrong with that? Besides, some subjects warrant more comments than others and getting important news out to people is a lot more important than how many comments you get.

You don’t have to post this as a comment if you don’t want to, just don’t get your undies in a bunch over this, quit bitchin and “GET BACK TO BLOGGIN!”

PS......My offer still stands if you want some pointers on posting formats.

  18. One more thing. Keep your posting standards where they're at. You don't need a repeat from the coward that hides in Mama's basement.

  22. Obama's first year in office?

    Total failure!

Today, I saw a bumper sticker which said, "1-20-09 -- George Bush's last day in office." Where can I get one that says, "1-20-09 -- The beginning of the end."

Obama promised people the world. College kids thought that were going to graduate and live the American dream. Half of those who did graduate are now unemployed or underemployed with monumental student loan debt. By the way, the next financial crisis will be the Student Loan Crisis. Kids borrow tens of thousands of dollars to attend school, then can't find jobs, and can't pay back the money. Student loan debt is not currently dischargeable in bankruptcy (except in rare cases). Watch Barack move to change that to benefit his voters. Parents who paid their kids' tuition from savings will feel like they've been f--ked!

The chronically unemployed (you know who I'm talking about) thought that Barack was going to buy them each a new Lexus. They're still riding the CTA and they're pretty angry - not at Barack, at us!

Obama has alienated the movers and the shakers of the financial community. They have no confidence in him and no respect for him, so they're not going to risk their money to make him look good. The economy continues to tumble. My house in 60655 today is worth what I paid for it . . . 12 years ago.

Obama has never run a lemonade stand. Now he's trying to run the nation. He's running it alright . . . . running it right into the ground.

    Obama gets a red "F."

  23. Hey, 2:13 p.m.---Check out goooh.com.

Politically speaking, I was having a wonderful debate today with someone. Everything was going well, until I was informed that I was a racist war-mongure. This happened after I informed my new friend that I leaned more towards a Republican point of view. That's when he/she resorted to name calling. At first I was tak'in aback. Then, I started thinking..........Is this true????????? After all, I have heard this before. So, I went into deep thought. Don't worry, It literally took only a minute. Here was my reply:

    War-mongure? Republicans? O.K.- just a few questions!

Who was the president that brought us the closest to nuclear war?
Who was the president that sent us to Vietnam?

I got no answer. So finally, I asked about his/her knowledge of George Wallace. Especially when it came to political parties. I suspect I will never get an answer from this human sheep.

Then it came to me... This person is probably a 19 year old college student that wanted to tell their children how MOM/DAD voted for the first 1/2 black president. Don't forget, he was raised by his 'Caucasion' family!

  26. I like hearing about what is happening around the neighborhood, good or bad! Open posting is a great thing, even though many "libs" are offended when race is mentioned, it is often an issue. I am worried about SXU and like to hear about what they are up to now. I think the blog serves a great purpose, don't quit it!

  28. Please support your local business owners. Theres mostly local people holding those jobs and we sure dont need anymore vacant storefronts around here. Thanks Ald.Rugai for the beautiful job on 111th and Kedzie I cant believe how fast things are moving.

  29. Just out of curiosity. Is rugai up for re-election soon? Will it be the first election since a Mt. Greenwood blog has been in excistence? I'm just saying, don't be fooled by progress.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I would love to see Rugai gone. Keeping the blog up and running may just help us get someone new in office. And as far as SXU, I feel like I am living on campus. I did that 20 years ago and do not want to do it again.

  31. What i would like to hear is about crime in our neighborhood, not all of it makes the bevery review or other newspapers.

If someone hears that their neighbors house or car or garage has been broken into, let us know, give us the address or at least the block that it happened on, It is happening more and more in our neighborhood and just maybe we can keep our eyes and ears more alert.
